A "third hand" for production

What began as a spontaneous idea in a garage is now a patented product in the KIPP portfolio: The cam lever with mandrel collet offers a quick, releasable method of positioning and fixating components in one step. As a flexible assembly aid, it finds use wherever handling, precision and time saving is required - from vehicle construction to assembly fixtures.
 

From customer enquiry to series production

The original idea arose from a practical challenge: A customer was looking for a solution for one person to efficiently carry out riveting processes on a lorry chassis. Desired was: A sort of "third hand" that holds and centres the workpiece in existing holes - without additional tools, without screws.

KIPP expert Franz Mayr then developed an initial prototype consisting of a cam lever and expanding mechanism. The idea was convincing - and was further developed into a patented product.

How it works

  • The mandrel collet is inserted into an existing hole

  • When the lever is closed, the mandrel expands and clamps in the lower component

  • An additional pull-down effect occurs with through holes

  • The centring is automatic, the component is securely fixated.

  • A disc spring packet ensures retraction when opened

  • The retaining force can be individually adjusted via a tie rod
     

This clamping device operates regardless of surface finish or fit - even with wider tolerances.

Robust, compact, versatile

The construction impresses with durable materials:

  • Cast aluminiumhandle

  • Mandrel collets, tie rods and thrust elementsmade from steel

  • Thrust washer made from fibreglass reinforced plastic

The compact design enables use in through and blind holes, with or without thread - ideal for assembly, joining or fixture processes in diverse industries.
